Comparing magnesium products

Check the amount of magnesium supplied by the recommended daily serving, the form used and any other nutrients in the formula. A compound or complex weight is not necessarily the amount of magnesium it provides.

Oral supplements and topical patches are different product types. The inclusion of a patch here does not establish nutrient absorption or equivalence to an oral supplement. Follow the directions and ingredient information for each specific product.

Check the current product label for directions, ingredients, allergens and suitability. Do not exceed the recommended intake. If you take medication or need advice about suitability, speak with a pharmacist or qualified healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between elemental magnesium and a magnesium complex?

Elemental magnesium is the amount of magnesium itself. The weight of a citrate, glycinate or multi-form complex can be much larger because it includes the compounds carrying that magnesium. Compare the declared magnesium amount per recommended daily serving and the percentage NRV where provided; do not compare a complex weight directly with an elemental-magnesium figure.

How do I compare glycinate, citrate and multi-form magnesium?

Start with the named forms, their declared amounts and the complete ingredient panel. A multi-form product may list several compounds without showing how much each contributes. Check the total elemental magnesium, serving size and any additional nutrients. The number of forms in a product name does not establish which formula is the right choice for you.

Are magnesium capsules, drinks and patches equivalent?

They have different directions and routes of use. For an oral product, compare the magnesium amount in the labelled serving. An amount listed on a patch is not evidence of the amount delivered through skin, so it should not be used to calculate an equivalent oral dose. Choose by the exact product information rather than assuming matching milligram numbers are interchangeable.
