Comparing omega-3 products

Compare the separately labelled EPA and DHA amounts per recommended serving rather than using total oil weight alone. Check fish and other allergens, capsule ingredients and dietary suitability; not every omega-3 product is vegan.

Check the current product label for directions, ingredients, allergens and suitability. Do not exceed the recommended intake. If you take medication or need advice about suitability, speak with a pharmacist or qualified healthcare professional.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between fish-oil weight and EPA plus DHA?

Total fish-oil weight includes more than EPA and DHA. Read the separately declared quantities of EPA and DHA per recommended serving when comparing omega-3 products. A capsule described as containing 1,000mg of oil does not automatically contain 1,000mg of EPA and DHA. Check the serving size as well as the individual figures.

How do I compare fish, krill and algae sources?

Start with the declared source, EPA and DHA amounts and complete ingredients. Fish and krill products have different allergen considerations, while an algae-based product still needs its own dietary-suitability check. Different oils and blends should not be compared solely by total oil quantity or by the number of capsules in the pack.

What should I check for a liquid omega-3 product?

Review the serving volume, measuring instructions and any storage or use-after-opening directions. Compare EPA and DHA for that volume with the recommended serving of another product. Flavouring, added vitamins and allergen information can vary, so check the exact bottle and variant rather than carrying over information from another oil.
